Introducing signature artist Jamie Fingal, the Rebel Quilter

We're thrilled to welcome Jamie Fingal as a signature artist.
Jamie FingalHer debut quilting-cottons line,
Home Is Where Your Story Begins, was first released at 2013 Fall Quilt Market in Houston. The collection showcases Jamie's fearless color palette and her love of collage. First delivery of the fabrics to quilt shops and independent retailers will take place in Feburary 2014.

Jamie is a frequent contributor to Quilting Arts magazine and a popular instructor at various quilt festivals and artists' retreats. Home Is Where Your Story Begins is based on Jamie's original drawings. This charming Jamie photo podcastcollection delivers her colorful style, collage aesthetic and whimsical point-of-view to quilters and sewists. Thoughtfully designed with patterns ideal for fussy-cutting, the collection covers a wide variety of applications in quilting, home-sewing and crafting. Find out more about Jamie and her design process in her Sept. 9 interview with Pat Sloan on the The Voice of Quilting podcast. And here's a peek at how she decoupaged her fabrics to make a funky pair of shoes!

Jamie co-curated the "What's For Dinner" exhibit that debuted at Fall Quilt Festival in Houston. Read about it and see pieces by her and co-curator Leslie Tucker Jenison in this Houston Chronicle article. Learn her fusible applique technique through this fabric flag tutorial.

Hoffman Bali Batiks:  Our Factory & Process

Bali employeeWe've been making authentic batiks at our factory on the beautiful Indonesia island of Bali for 30 years. The motifs of each of our batiks are imagined and drawn by hand by our talented textile artists employed at our headquarters in Mission Viejo, Calif. The artwork is sent to our Bali factory where our amazing crew of master craftspeople take the designs and our requests for colorways and produce the most beautiful batiks exclusively for quilters. Take a peek at our factory and the process via the Hoffman California Fabrics' channel on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPHwuI_GHHo.

Water Treatment systemA water-treatment and cistern system was installed at cisternsour Bali factory many years ago. The rinsewater from the hand-dying process (including exhausted dye and wax) is channeled through the system and a series of cisterns. The water is cleaned of the exhausted dyes and wax so that it is clear and natural before it is returned to the environment.

Melissa Ratzlaff: new Hoffman Challenge curator

Melissa Ratzlaff_curatorHi! My name is Melissa Ratzlaff and I am so excited to be the new curator of the 2014 Hoffman Challenge. Since 2007, I have worked closely as an employee for Julie Breidt and Kelly Gallagher Abbott, both recent curators of the challenge, helping to ensure the challenge ran smoothly each year. Many of you have already met me at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival, as I have worked the show selling the Hoffman Challenge Magazine that I created and edited.

I have chosen many different paths in life. I received my AA in Art and my BA in Graphic Design at San Diego State University. After working in the Graphics field, I decided I wanted to go back to school to teach. Currently I work as a Kindergarten teacher in Colorado and in my spare time quilt as often as I can. I love having my summers off to really get crafty and creative!

I have been quilting since 2007 when I made my first lap size quilt. While making the quilt, I ignored advice of others and let my art background guide me when it came time to make quilting decisions. This first quilt was a pieced black and white traditional pattern top with red quilting thread. Most people told me I was insane to do red quilting. It came out BEAUTIFUL and most that see it, Love it. To this day it is one of my favorite quilts. I have quilted many quilts since then and even won 2nd place Peopleís Choice award at Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival in 2010. I love all quilts from traditional to modern art, as each one is a piece of art in itself made by a loving hand.

I am ready and look forward for this new chapter in my life and canít wait to meet as many of you as I can, even if it is just through the phone call or email.

Bullas Bears BOM

Bullas Bears quilt topWeíre thrilled that quilter and needleworker Nan Baker selected Hoffman Bali Hand-dyed Watercolors (Style #1895) to interpret

Now quilters can bring Willís joyous holiday bears into their homes with the Bullas Bears-themed quilt designed by Nan (who is the owner of Purrfect Spots) for the online-only The Quilt Pattern Magazine. The pattern is serialized in the February through December issues of the magazine, which is available by subscription.
